Position Summary
The University of Colorado College of Nursing is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefitted Nurse Practitioner (NP) to provide integrated primary care. This is a clinic-based faculty position within the IRC-Clinical Series, Clinical Practice Track that combines direct patient care with clinical precepting and leadership/service responsibilities.
Nature of Work:
The NP functions as an independent primary care provider within an interprofessional, team-based care model and contributes to the clinical, educational, and service missions of the College of Nursing. In addition to direct patient care, the NP participates in clinical teaching, quality improvement, and program development activities that support innovative and accessible care delivery in an academic health environment.
The College of Nursing’s Clinical & Community Affairs enterprise includes nurse-managed community clinics that also serves as a teaching and training sites for future health professionals. They provide a dynamic learning environment that expose students to team-based, coordinated care delivery within an academic health system.
Examples of Work Performed
Clinical Care & Patient Management
- Serves as a primary care provider for the clinic’s patient population.
- Performs comprehensive patient assessments, including physical examinations, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and consultation.
- Obtains patient histories and develops individualized, evidence-based plans of care.
- Coordinates patient care activities across the interprofessional team and consulting CU and UCHealth tams.
- Identifies deviations from normal findings and consults or refers as clinically appropriate.
- Provides health education, counseling, and preventive care to patients, families, and groups.
- Participate in after-hours triage call on a rotating basis.
Clinical Procedures
- Performs outpatient primary care procedures within scope of practice, including but not limited to:
- Contraceptive procedures, including Nexplanon insertion and removal and intrauterine device (IUD) placement and removal
- Dermatologic procedures, such as punch and shave biopsies, cryotherapy, and lesion removal
- Wound care, including laceration repair and suturing
- Incision and drainage of abscesses
- Joint and soft tissue injections, as clinically indicated
- Point-of-care testing and specimen collection
- Maintains procedural competency and adheres to evidence-based practice standards, documentation requirements, and informed consent processes.
Clinical Operations & Quality
- Completes clinical documentation accurately and in a timely manner within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Demonstrates proficiency in EHR use, including troubleshooting, workflow optimization, and downtime procedures.
- Adheres to safety, infection control, environmental, and regulatory standards.
- Participates in clinical peer review and routine chart audits, as required.
- Follows established clinical workflows and engages the care team in quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintains awareness of regulatory compliance requirements and contributes to improvement efforts.
Precepting, Leadership & Program Development
- Functions as a clinical preceptor for advanced practice nursing students
- Provides leadership in the design and implementation of integrated, interprofessional models of care.
- Participates in programmatic planning, including development and evaluation of evidence-based clinical policies and procedures.
- Serves as a liaison among patients, collaborating physicians, community partners, and College of Nursing leadership.
- Participates in the selection and onboarding of clinical providers and staff.
Professional & Administrative Responsibilities
- Actively participates in clinic marketing, outreach, and patient recruitment efforts.
- Maintains active credentialing with health plans and ensures all required documentation remains current.
- Participates in health plan contracting activities, as applicable.
- Attends clinic, College of Nursing, and Clinical and Community Affairs meetings as required.
- Provides backup support to front and back-office staff as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of clinic operations and the College mission.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Faculty rank is determined at the end of the interview process based on a comprehensive review of candidate qualifications and experience compared to established College of Nursing faculty criteria.
This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor of Clinical Practice, Senior Instructor of Clinical Practice, or Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:
Instructor of Clinical Practice:
- Graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution
- Current RN, RXN, and APN licensures in good standing (any state)
- Must have CO licensures by date of hire. Could be working toward CO clinical licenses during application process and registered with DORA-Department of Regulatory Agencies.

Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice:

Conditions of employment (at all levels):
- Must obtain Colorado RN, APN, and RxN licenses by date of hire.
- Must obtain NPI, Medicaid provider number, and complete CAQH enrollment by date of hire.
- Must maintain BLS/CPR certification.
- Must remain credentialed with participating health plans.
- Must work standard clinic hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.) with rotating on-call coverage.
- Must be able to work in a clinical environment with exposure to biological hazards.
Preferred Qualifications (at all levels):
- Prior experience working in an academic or teaching environment.
- Demonstrated experience performing outpatient primary care procedures.
- Experience managing diverse and medically complex patient populations.
Competencies:
- Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and the ability to independently assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic conditions within scope of practice.
- Effectively prioritizes and responds to changes in patient condition with appropriate urgency and coordination.
- Proficient in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, ensuring accurate, timely, and complete documentation.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively with patients, families, interdisciplinary teams, and academic partners.
- Demonstrates the ability to function effectively within an integrated, team-based care model.
- Maintains professionalism, adaptability, and accountability in a dynamic clinical environment.
- Demonstrates effective clinical teaching skills and commitment to mentoring students.
- Ability to manage a full primary care panel and maintain productivity expectations.
- Demonstrates attention to detail and adherence to regulatory, credentialing, and compliance requirements.
- Willingness and ability to participate in rotating on-call triage schedules
- Demonstrates engagement in quality improvement, patient access initiatives, and clinic growth efforts.
