Company Profile
SLATERPAULL Architects
Company Overview
Since 1972, our firm has had the privilege of creating spaces for education, worship, commerce, civic services, performance among other types of facilities. Extensive experience in historic preservation, planning, interior design, and sustainable design complements a full-service architectural practice, allowing us to create buildings that integrate seamlessly with the communities and environments they serve.
SLATERPAULL Architects is a 36-year old firm providing full-service architecture, interior design and preservation services. We were incorporated in 1972 and maintain an office in Denver, Colorado with 40 employees. The projects we work on range in size from under $200,000 to over $80 million. Our focus is on client service. We strive to deliver design and project management services that foster enduring client relationships.
We are stewards of our environment and support architecture that nutures its sustainability. Our mission is to create high performance buildings that minimize the impact on our environment through a process that is inclusive and collaborative of all that are a part of its development.
The best way to ensure a successful outcome is to focus on the process. The sketchy box represented in our logo reminds us to honor the design process. In doing so, we allow our creative intuition to explore freely in the spirit of collaboration. As architects, we have a responsibility to our clients to encourage a passionate dialogue between all that is possible and that which is necessary. Ultimately, it is architecture that is both aesthetically relevant and beautifully functional. To this end, we seek projects and clients in a spirit of collaboration where creativity can be pursued with discipline.
Company History
SLATERPAULL Architects is a third-generation architecture practice established by founding partners Seymour (Sim) M. Slater and James (Jim) F. Paull in 1972.
The firm’s roots trace back to Raymond Harry Ervin (1900-1969), one of Denver’s prominent architects. Ervin was renowned for his work on the Shangri-la, Denver Club Building, J.C. Penny Building, George Washington High School and the First National Bank Building at 631 17th Street, which stood as Denver’s tallest building at the time. Working under Ervin, Alfred H. “Bud” Piel, Seymour M. “Sim” Slater, John I. Small, and A. Aubrey “Skip” Spenst were elevated to associates and then transitioned to their own firm; Piel, Slater, Small & Spenst in 1960.
In 1972 Slater-Paull & Associates was formed, beginning the 36-year history that continues to date. Clayton Cole and Gary Petri, both principals, joined the firm in 1977. James Pedler, principal and managing partner, joined the firm in 1981. Adele Willson, the firm’s first female architect, began as an intern in 1984 and was promoted to principal in 1998. Jennifer Cordes joined the firm in 1996 and was promoted to principal in 2008. Today, SLATERPAULL Architects is led by this team of five principals with nearly 40 dedicated employees.
